The 7th annual Gold Star Run for Honor was held May 25th in Saugus, MA. The race benefits the CPL Scott J. Procopio Memorial Scholarship program which provides scholarships to Saugus High School Seniors.
Benevento companies was the proud to be the Finish Line Sponsor for this year’s Scott J. Procopio Gold Star Run for Honor. This 5K/10K race was held on May 26th at the Saugus Town Hall.
The race was created in memory of CPL Scott J. Procopio, who was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq 11 years ago. A native of Saugus, Scott joined the Marine Corps in 2004 and he was assigned as a machine gunner with Kilo Co, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, based out of Camp Lejeune, NC. Upon returning from his first deployment to Iraq, Scott went back in 2006 as a machine gunner with 3rd Plt, Kilo Co. On the morning of morning of April 2, 2006, Scott and 3 other soldiers were killed as a result of a remotely detonated roadside bomb.
CPL Scott Procopio Scholarship Fund:
The purpose of the fund is to provide educational scholarships and assistance to deserving members of area schools, and to provide educational scholarships and opportunities to the children, siblings and spouses of members of the United States Armed Forces who have been killed in combat operations. The fund has been awarding annual scholarships to graduating local seniors in memory of Cpl. Procopio since 2006, with over $40,000 in scholarships awarded to date.
